Training Overview

What Makes Your Dog Tick? Discover what truly motivates your dog; food, toys, praise or play. I also talked about how to use this in training. You'll also learn about the supplies you need to get the most out of the training.

 Start the Indication. Learn the first steps to teaching your dog how to tell you they’ve found something.

 Search Time! Begin teaching simple treat searches and choose clear cues to set your training up for success.

 Sharpen the Indication. Add another layer to your dog’s alert behaviour and reinforce what a ‘find’ looks like.

Take It Outside. Bring scentwork into your walks with real-world food and toy searches that boost engagement.

By Day 5, your dog will be confidently searching indoors and starting to 'tell' you they've found the hide. You’ll have go-to games for rainy days, enrichment and better focus on walks

Hi, I'm your host - Sara

I'm a Crocs wearing, treat bag toting, bobble-hatted dog training nerd I started dog training back in 1998, and have gone on to train and compete in agility, rally obedience, scentwork and more. I have a particular passion for foundations, but also love digging into more complex training concepts.

I've been supporting learners online and in person for over a decade, and I enjoy coming up with out-of-the-box solutions.
I set up Compass Canine in 2018, and it's all about choice and respect in dog training - for dogs and their guardians alike. I'm the author of Scentwork: Step by Step, which has now sold over 10,000 copies

I'm ably assisted in all things dog training by my two spaniels, Ripley and Peak. That's who you'll be seeing in the video demos!
  • Will there be replays?
    Yes, the replay of the daily live training and Q&A will be uploaded as soon as possible after the session ends. You'll get an email with the link as soon as it's ready. You will have until Tue 3rd March to watch all the training (unless you opt for the VIP pass)
  • How much is the training?
    The training is FREE. You will be offered the option of buying an optional VIP pass that gives you lifetime access to the training.
  • I don't have any special equipment, can I still join in?
    Absolutely. When you register you'll get details of the items you'll need to join in, but chances are you already have most of it at home already!
  • Can I do all the training at home?
    Absolutely, and indeed that's the best place to start. That said, scentwork also gives you some great options to enhance your relationship with your dog out and about as well.
  • I have a puppy/injured dog/older dog - is this training suitable for them?
    Yes! Scentwork is suitable for all ages and breed of dog - prepare to be surprised at their abilities You may need to make adjustments depending on your individual dog's physical capabilities, but I'll talk about that in the training as needed (and you can always ask questions)
